Tuesday 1st October – Travelling + cycling****Point du Groulin to St. Martin de Re and back -cloudy with bright spells

After breakfast we travelled down to the Ile de Re, stopping at a bird hide to look out over the Marais towards the island and see if we could see any new birds but only some skylarks and LBJs (little brown jobs!) but we did see a mega wasps nest. Paid our 8 euro toll and went over the island really easily without having to fight our way through La Rochelle. As soon as you get onto the island it starts telling you about camper vans being regulated and basically they don’t want you anywhere and we only saw one aire so presumably they want you to go onto proper camp sites (the majority of which closed at the end of September!). We went to Ste Marie de Re first and had our lunch overlooking a really lovely beach – no height restriction amazingly. There were literally hundreds of small waders, sanderlings, turnstones and plovers. Drove to the Tourist information in Rivedoux and got a cycling map. Where we parked must have been a camper aire in the past because they had all the facilities including water so we were able to fill up all our bottles. Drove on getting just as despondent as on Noirmoitier but we finally found a place to stop with some other vans just outside Loix at the point du Groulin:) Asked an old couple in the van in front if they were going to stay and they said they were - although they didn’t speak any English we were able to mime sleeping and they gave us the thumbs up:). Got the bikes off quickly and once again decided it really is the only way to get to know a place properly. The cycle paths are excellent and before we knew it we had cycled all around the edge of the island and were over half way to the very pretty St. Martin de Re. Decided to carry on and I went up the church tower to get a good panoramic view while Mag had a wander down to the harbour. We both walked round the harbour to the fortifications and harbour wall then cycled back to have salmon for tea! Another 20 mile ride but it doesn’t seem like that when there is so much to see:)
